My Heirloom Hydrangea

French or Hortensia "Mophead"

(Hydrangea macrophylla)

Morning Sun/
Afternoon Shade

Shades of blue or pink depend on the pH of your soil.

Hardy to Zone 5

I have propagated these hydrangeas for the past 9 years from an heirloom shrub that my grandmother planted over 40 years ago (1972) in Atlanta, GA. In 2003, I took cuttings from her original shrub and rooted over 400 baby hydrangeas that year! This was the beginning of my nursery business when I started selling these plants at local farmers' markets in 2004.

Lacecap Hydrangea

French Lacecaps

(H. macrophylla normalis)

Morning Sun/
Afternoon Shade

Shades of blue or pink depend on the pH of your soil.

Hardy to Zone 5

These hydrangeas don't have huge round (mophead) flowers. On these blooms, only the outside edges of the "caps of lace" have open flowers. They give an airy, graceful appearance to large rounded shrubs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tardiva Hydrangea

Panicle Hydrangea

(H. paniculata 'Tardiva')

Sun/Part Shade

Color can't be changed by soil pH.

Hardy to Zone 3

These hydrangeas have white cone-shaped, or panicle, flowers. They have an upright growth habit, and grow taller than mophead hydrangeas. Shrubs bloom later than other hydrangeas, and can take more sun. Very cold hardy; a tough shrub.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Irises

Tall Bearded

(Iris germanica)

Full Sun

Assorted colors

Hardy to Zone 5

When my grandmother died, I chose her plants as my "inheritance." While other family members were inside her country house dividing family heirlooms, I was outside in her garden, dividing other heirlooms - her plants. Many of these plants were the irises she loved that now live in my garden. Some are solids; some have differently colored standards and falls; and others have contrasting edging around the petals. I don't mark any as to color so if they're not blooming when I ship them, yours will be a surprise!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purple Beautyberry

French Mulberry

(Callicarpa dichotoma)

Full Sun/Part Shade

At least 5' tall with equal spread

Hardy to Zone 5

Deciduous perennial shrub provides late-season interest with its striking amethyst-purple berries borne in clusters along arching stems. Fruiting food source for birds that perch along stems to eat the berries.

2002 Georgia Gold Medal Plant Winner

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forsythia

Yellow Bells, Golden Bells

(Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood Gold')

Full Sun/Part Shade

Height 8'-10'
w/equal spread

 Hardy to Zone 4

This deciduous perennial shrub is one of the first to flower at the end of winter, heralding the arrival of spring. Yellow bell-shaped flowers are borne in profusion along bare stems before leaves form.

My Heirloom Hostas

Plantain Lily

(Hosta spp.)

Shade/Part Sun

24" spread

Hardy to Zone 3

Of all the hostas in my shade garden, including many named cultivars, this open-pollinated unnamed cultivar is my favorite. I purchased the parent plant as a tiny start 12 years ago from a lady who'd been growing these for 50 years. From that one plant, I've propagated many hundreds of hostas. Although hostas are primarily grown for their foliage, the hummingbirds love the beautiful purple-and-white streaked flowers on these plants (photo of flowers below under SEEDS).
